Foster homes allow us to assist cats prior to finding their forever homes. Is fostering for you? Check out these frequently asked questions. Interested in learning more or don't see the information you are looking for? Email or call us at 905.964.4778 and one of our volunteers will be happy to answer your questions.
How much will it cost me? The good news is nothing. Our organization provides all supplies including food, litter, toys, blankets. We also arrange and pay for all veterinary care required.
How long will kitty(ies) stay with me? Fostering depends on each individual animal. It ranges anywhere from a week to a few months.
How many kittens/cats will I be given at one time? This depends on many factors. If we have a young cat that needs a wee bit of extra one-on-one time prior to adoption it will most likely be this one alone to allow for lots of snuggle time.
If we have a small litter of kittens we may want them to stay together. Larger litters may be split between foster homes to ensure they get enough attention and no one is overwhelmed with providing care.
What do I need to provide? We ask our foster homes to provide a small room where the kitten/cat will be kept separate from the rest of the household. The room should be kitten-proofed so risk of injury is eliminated. Aside from them having a safe, cozy space to call their own and snuggle, areas where they can hide should be eliminated. Our experience shows keeping them in their own space assists the socialization process. Allowing them to run throughout the house means they can hide under furniture, negatively impacting their socialization progress.
Keeping them contained away from your pets also ensures any pre-emergent minor illnesses such as "kitten colds" are not spread throughout the house.
Will I receive training? We will meet you personally to deliver our KitKat Foster Handbook and provide orientation to both the foster process and our organization. You will also be provided with contacts you can call on at any time.
